“On June 8, 1967, US Navy intelligence ship USS Liberty was suddenly and brutally attacked on the high seas in international waters by the air and naval forces of Israel. The Israeli forces attacked with full knowledge that this was an American ship and lied about it. Survivors have been forbidden for 40 years to tell their story under oath to the American public. The USSLiberty Memorial web site tells their story and is dedicated to the memory of the 34 brave men who died.

The Attack

After surveilling USS Liberty for more than nine hours with almost hourly aircraft overflights and radar tracking, the air and naval forces of Israel attacked our ship in international waters without warning. USS Liberty was identified as a US naval ship by Israeli reconnaissance aircraft nine hours before the attack and continuously tracked by Israeli radar and aircraft thereafter. Sailing in international waters at less than five knots, with no offensive armament, our ship was not a military threat to anyone.

The Israeli forces attacked without warning and without attempting to contact us. Thirty four Americans were killed in the attack and another 174 were wounded.   The ship, a $40-million dollar state-of-the-art signals intelligence platform, was later declared unsalvageable and sold for scrap.

The Cover Up

Despite a near-universal consensus that the Israeli attack was made with full knowledge that USS Liberty was a US Navy ship, the Johnson administration began an immediate cover-up of this fact. Though administration officers continued individually to characterize the attack as deliberate, the Johnson administration never sought the prosecution of the guilty parties or otherwise attempted to seek justice for the victims. They concealed and altered evidence in their effort to downplay the attack. Though they never formally accepted the Israeli explanation that it was an accident, they never pressed for a full investigation either. They simply allowed those responsible literally to get away with murder.

In an ongoing effort to reveal the truth about the attack, the USS Liberty Veterans Association has filed with the Secretary of the Army in the manner prescribed by law a detailed, fully documented Report of War Crimes describing the circumstances of the attack on our ship and evidence that it was a crime under international law. In accordance with international law and treaties, the United States is obligated to investigate the allegations. FAQ: Investigations

Q: Haven’t there been numerous US investigations into the attack? A: No there haven’t. No US governmental entity has ever undertaken an investigation into the culpability for the attack. There have been investigations into the seamanship of the crew (US Navy Court of Inquiry), the message handling procedures of the US military (The JCS Russ Report), and other attempts to report publicly reported facts. No agency or other institution has ever conducted a fact finding investigation into the question of why the Israelis launched the attack and their prior knowledge that USS Liberty was a US Navy ship.

Q: What about Congressional investigations? A: There have been no Congressional investigations. One of the more prominent Israeli propagandists, AJ Cristol, created this allegation in the mold of the “Big Lie” technique of the 1930’s (“if you tell a big enough lie often enough, people will come to believe it”). The Librarian of Congress, when asked about this allegation of purported Congressional investigations, formally replied: “After checking numerous resources, including the CIS (Congressional Information Service) Indexes to Congressional Hearings (both published and unpublished), and the Public Documents Masterfile, I could find no evidence that the Congress ever held hearings or launched an investigation into the June 8, 1967 incident with the USS Liberty.” This allegation is a lie, plain and simple. The chief proponent of this lie, A.J. Cristol, has repeatedly been asked to produce evidence of the truth of his allegation. He has refused to do so.

Q: But I’ve seen many references to “official US investigations,” are you saying that these are false? A: That is exactly what we are saying. They are false. There have been no“official US investigations.” There have been no unofficial US investigations. There have been no US investigations at all into the conduct of the Israeli forces when the attacked USS Liberty. The Israelis have never been asked to produce evidence, nor have they been interviewed about the attack.

Q: Why have the Israelis and their partisans made these claims? A: When you don’t have a legitimate factual defense, and you are without shame and want your position to be accepted at any cost, the only thing left is lying. The best argument in favor of their guilt is the fact that they have taken so much trouble to lie about so many things. Why would innocent people lie?
FAQ: Why was the attack unlawful? Q: Why was the attack unlawful? A: First, you have to bear in mind that USS Liberty was in international waters, had no offensive armament, and was moving so slowly that she was barely making way. No one, not Israel, not Egypt, not the Soviets – no one – had a legal right to fire on such a ship. The attack was, per se, a violation of international law. Under international law, in the absence of an attack against the Israelis by USS Liberty, the only legal right the Israelis had was to approach the ship and identify her. They did not do this. Q: But I’ve read that USS Liberty fired first on the Israeli torpedo boats? A: That allegation is subject to controversy. First, the ship was already on fire from the repeated, savage Israeli air attacks. Many sailors were dead and dozens more were wounded. The crew members closest to the machine gun that fired say that the fires from the ship as a result of the earlier Israeli napalm attacks “cooked off” the ammunition in the gun. Others say that one of the crewmen fired “a few rounds” toward the attacking Israeli torpedo boats. Most witnesses agree that the fire cooked off the ammunition. Photos taken after the attack show that all four of the machine guns were inoperative – most likely as a result of the air attacks. Even if a crewman fired at the attacking torpedo boats it was only after Israeli aircraft had brutally attacked the ship, killing and wounding his shipmates and the torpedo boats were in the process of making an attack run on the ship. It is important to note that the Israeli torpedo boats were not approaching under a flag of truce, nor did they make any effort to demonstrate peaceful intent. Israeli aircraft had just repeatedly strafed and napalmed USS Liberty in an unlawful attack.  To assert a defense that they were fired upon by USS Liberty and that justified their torpedo attack is absurd. Q: But USS Liberty sailed into a war zone? A: Neither Israel nor Egypt had declared a war exclusion zone nor issued a notice to mariners. USS Liberty had a legal right to be where she was. Israel had no legal right to attack her. A country at war cannot simply attack anything that moves, just because there is a war going on. Assume for a moment that USS Liberty was in fact an Egyptian merchant ship in international waters, Israel still would not have had a legal right to attack her without first trying to stop her and identify her. International law obligated the Israelis to at least make an attempt to stop the ship and ask for identification. They did not do this. By their own account, the Israelis launched their attack without a positive identification as to who they were attacking in international waters. Q: What about “the fog of war”? A: What “fog of war”? The Israelis positively identified USS Liberty as a specific US Navy ship (“USS Liberty“) in the early morning hours of the day of the attack. They maintained aerial surveillance of her throughout the day. They followed her, using their maritime defense radar network. Then they launched a 75 minute coordinated air-sea attack. There was no “fog of war.”
Q:	We are frequently asked, “Why did Israel attack?”

A:	Israel’s motive is irrelevant. They did it. They admit they did it. If motive were a factor, then Charles Manson should be released from prison because no one knows his precise motive for mass murder.

Q:	Still, they must have has some reason to attack. What plausible motive could they have had?

A:

We were an intelligence ship and the Israelis were doing something that they did not want the US to know about. One popular writer of Jewish fear-literature, John Loftus, writes in “The Secret War Against the Jews”(a Jewish version of The Turner Diaries) that Israel attacked deliberately because Israeli authorities believed that USS Liberty was relaying Israeli war plans to Egypt in order to assure the destruction of the Jewish State. That is patently ridiculous, but widely accepted even in Israel. Loftus claims to have documented his position through interviews with long lists of “retired old spies” whom he refuses to identify. While Loftus may be correct about Israeli paranoia, he is totally wrong about Liberty’s mission. Liberty’s primary mission was to collect intelligence on the Soviet forces in the area. The ship didn’t even have a qualified Hebrew linguist aboard.

Q:	What other reason might they have had for attacking?

A:

Intelligence analysts agree that they attacked because they feared we might learn something that they did not want the United States to know. That could have been 1. The planned invasion of the Golan Heights which was set to start a few hours after Liberty’s arrival in the area. When Liberty arrived, the invasion was postponed for 24 hours, Liberty was attacked, and the invasion took place the next day. Did they postpone the invasion untilLiberty was out of the way and unable to report on the war? 2. It is possible that they were afraid that Liberty might learn and report to the United States that Israeli forces were executing up to 1,000 Egyptian Prisoners of War at El Arish at the very moment thatLiberty was just 13 miles off shore. 3. It is also possible that USS Liberty was attacked to prevent the ship from reporting a deliberate massacre of 14 Indian United Nations peacekeepers that took place in Gaza shortly before Israel’s attack on USS Liberty.

Q:	Some of those reasons sound far fetched. Is there any proof to substantiate them?

A:

Israeli apologists dismiss these stories as untrue or wildly speculative, despite the fact that they are well documented. Israeli apologist-historian Michael Oren in his book “Six Days of War” and in published articles dismisses the claim as untrue claiming that, if it were true, there would be mass graves, reports in the major media, and great outcries from Egypt for justice. Behold! There are mass graves, major media reports and cries for justice. FAQ: Why was the attack unlawful? Q: Often we are asked “What can I do to help?” A: Here are some things you can do with some examples of what others have done before: 1. Write to your Congressman. The attack on our ship was a documented, proven war crime even as described by the Israeli government. The Israelis claim that they attacked without first identifying the ship or its nationality. That alone is a war crime. We know that they did in fact identify our ship as American before attacking and attacked with full knowledge that we were American. Yet even if their story were true, their own version of the circumstances would identify this attack as a war crime. Thirty-four Americans died and 174 were wounded. Q: But why do they feel that an investigation is such a bad thing? A: If the attack was a legitimate mistake, then an honest investigation would reveal that fact. The objective, undisputed facts, however, make it pretty clear that the attack could not possibly have been a mistake or accident. An honest investigation would reveal that the attack was not a mistake. If it was not a mistake or accident, then the American people would demand an accounting from Israel and Israel would have to decide whether to punish those responsible (something they have refused to do for more than 40 years), or not punish them and suffer a loss of support in the United States. Israeli supporters know this and attack USS Liberty survivors and supporters in order to prevent this from happening. Q: How do they get away with it? A: The power of the Israeli lobby is not a secret. Recently, two HarvardUniversity, Kennedy School of Government Fellows were forced to go abroad to find a publisher for their paper on this subject. The Israeli lobby was powerful enough to keep them from publishing in the United States. When American scholars cannot publish papers in their own country, that speaks volumes about the power of a foreign lobby.

An Eyewitness Account:

Let’s listen to Phil Tourney, survivor of the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty and contributing editor for American Free Press newspaper ors in his own words:

“We had two corpsmen onboard and only one doctor, Richard Kiepfer. We kept hoping for help from our government, but nevertheless the seconds dragged on like hours and the hours dragged on like years and soon reality set in and we figured out that we were on our own. The heat of the day gave way to the darkness, which was a welcome change, as the blistering heat cooked our crippled ship, making the smell of blood and death all the more impossible to ignore.

I had no idea how that night would change my life forever, but I was about to find out.

The wounded were screaming in pain, bleeding everywhere. Every sailor who could help was doing all he could to calm our fallen shipmates. They had head wounds and bodies full of shrapnel. Lt. Commander Philip Armstrong the (executive officer of the Liberty) was on one of the tables. I stopped to check on him and he asked me to light him a cigarette…I did and gave it to him. He took long drags off it and soon it was gone and he wanted another so I gave it to him. He smoked it the same as he had the first.

As I was talking to him I thought he would be fine. It seemed to me he would make it, but as it turned out, I was wrong. A few moments later he was dead.

I was shocked and saddened but knew that there would be time to weep later, as others needed help. As the night wore on I was told to go to the Officers’ Mess. There I saw Dr. Kiepfer with his life jacket around his waist. Little did I know that his belly had been cut to pieces and he was using the life jacket to keep pressure on his wounds so as not to bleed to death while he tended to the wounded. He never uttered a word of complaint.

My job was to hold a light for Doc Kiepfer as he did his work. While he was working on Gary Blanchard, Gary asked me to take off his socks because he said his ‘feet were burning’. I did as he asked, took his socks off and it seemed to ease him a bit. Doc started cutting him open from his chest bone on down, working as hard as he could, but it was obvious even to me that it was too late. Gary’s kidneys were all shot up and a few moments later he died. This wonderful young man was gone and it was at this point that I began to hate the murderers who did this to us. What did we do to deserve this? This was not the action of a friend; it was like being sucker-punched the way Judas did to Jesus. They had overflown us for hours earlier in the day and knew who we were. We felt safe, and it was at this moment I figured out that what they were really doing was reconnaissance, finding our weak points so as to better kill us.

Doc put a few stitches in him to keep his insides from falling out all over the place and then it was on to the next person. How Doc was able to do what he did was something not human. It was something from another world, and by that I mean probably from heaven, as no human could have done what he did and I will never forget it as long as I live.

The Captain stayed on the bridge and would not take any medical help until the crew was looked after first.

As the sun began to rise Captain wanted his ship cleaned up, and for that Rick Amati and I got the gruesome duty. We got pressure to our fire hoses and began the grim task that still brings me nightmares. Body parts were all over, blood and a shoe with a foot still in it. We had no clue that it belonged to. We did as we were ordered and began washing the body parts of our American brothers over the side of the ship to be forever interred in the sea. Their families would never get the chance of seeing them at their wake…No lock of hair, no goodbye kiss, nothing. The tears were rolling down my face as I did this unholy thing of giving to the sea my friends and shipmates and as I did this I begged their forgiveness.

The gun tubes were full of blood that a fire hose was not going to remove, as the blood was baked onto the haze gray paint of our ship. Blood was streaming down the starboard bulkhead wall. We made are way down to the main deck and finally, after what seemed to be an eternity, our gruesome job was over. What I had just done has been a burden on my soul everyday for 40 years, which by my math is somewhere close to 15,000 days.

It is now about 10 am and we see American ships on the horizon. At that moment my body gave out and I laid on the deck…I was exhausted… It was hard to move and I felt relieved that help was there but also anger that help did not come when we needed it the most. Where was my country? Where was my navy? Where was my government? How the hell could they do such a thing to 300 men who swore to give their lives if necessary for the defense of America? My world, my faith in everything that I knew growing up had just been shattered like broken glass, and even though I didn’t know it at the time, this was to be the event that changed me forever, like Saul who, while on his way to Damascus to kill the followers of this new religion known as Christianity, was knocked off his horse, blinded and turned into someone and something new.

Little did I know that my work had only just begun!  Now, 40 years later, I am here to tell the story of what happened on June 8^th, 1967 to nearly 300 American boys onboard a ship known as the USS Liberty when it was attacked by Israel for nearly 2 hours. People may dismiss what I say as the ranting  of an angry old man, but given what is taking place today regarding the war in the Middle East and everything that may happen, my suggestion is that–while there is time–people turn off the Britney Spears, the Desperate Housewives and the football games and listen, listen carefully to what happened, as it is likely to happen again, because, as the old saying goes, ‘a leopard does not change its spots.”

If some other country would have done this to America, you could have imagined what USA had done to that country. But what USA President London B. Johnson and USA secretary Robert McNamara did to even protect their own naval officers? First they did not react promptly to save the precious human lives, second they did nothing to Israel; a country receiving maximum USA free AIDS. Perhaps Johnson was under severe obligation of Israeli lobby that brought him into office after killing President John F. Kennedy. Not only President Johnson but also subsequent Presidents of USA did nothing to punish Israel for its heinous daylight crime. President Bush Sr. and Secretary James Baker banned the press coverage of medals giving ceremony of USS Liberty survivors. They did not even enter in the room where the ceremony was being held, though a separate ceremony in a different room was well attended by the President and the Secretary along with huge barrage of American Press and media personnel.

The price of slavery and cowardice is simply too great and too painful. See how American and European forces are being used under direct Zionist orders to restore multi billion dollars underground drug mafia heroin supply from Afghanistan which was totally stopped by Mullah Omar. Omar said that all drugs are not permissible in Islam. He simply can’t violate his Creator and Sustainer’s orders. He refused hefty commissions by the drug mafia that promised him a red carpet treatment and threatened him that they will send Afghans into Stone Age! His answer was simple; Do it and we shall see. How right was he! Today America has accepted its clear defeat in Afghanistan and is trying hard to pull out its troops. Who was the beneficiary of the war? Of course the underground drug mafia and the companies which supplied bombs and infrastructure. USA and European business, media and courts are under immense Zionist control!

When we compare Turkish Prime Minister’s bold brave and honest speech with the timid actions of USA Presidents, Vice Presidents and Secretaries we know very well how severely USA is in enslaved by Israel. Dr. Aafia showed the light to USA society to how to come out of this dark tunnel when she distributed 30,000 copies of Quran, the last and the final divine book which is protected in its original language for last 1450 years along with its immense beauty, effectiveness and motivation.
